Department of Medicinal Chemistry
Modules delivered by the academic staff of the department for different disciplines within the university are Medicinal Chemistry I , II & III Organic Chemistry I & II, Practical Organic Chemistry I & II, Instrumental Analysis I, Practical Instrumental Analysis, Analytical Chemistry I & II, Practical Analytical Chemistry I & II.



There are several research laboratories at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry which are specially equipped to carry out
research in different areas of medicinal chemistry such as organic synthesis, pharmaceutical analysis, metabolism, molecular modelling and QSAR. Facilities in the research laboratories consist of the arrays of UV, FTIR, HPLC and GC instruments, and different molecular modelling software runnig under Windows and Unix operating system working on the clusters of computer workstations. We also have access to the share facilities at the school of Pharmacy, such as 200 and 60 MHz NMR, and the facilities at the Drug Applied Research Centre.

areas of Research
●Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) studies: Current research projects involve the application of QSAR methods to the aqueous solubility of drugs, skin and oral absorption, skin penetration enhancers, volume of distribution, surface energies of liquids.

●Drug metabolism and inhibition: Investigation of metabolism of drugs by molybdenum hydroxylases either as partially purified fractions or in liver slices, and the inhibitory effects of other compound, particulary those obtained from medicinal plants are among other research projects covered at the departement. We also study the oxygen free radicals generation by enzymatic reactions catelyzed by aldhyde oxidase and xanthine oxidase.

●Molecular Modelling and Bioinformatics: We are interested in molecular modelling of proteins with a view of rational drug design. Currently we are working on the modelling of a-adrenergic receptors, drug metabolizing enzymes, developing bioinformatics tools for the prediction of a-helical transmembrane segments of membrane proteins, and prediction of rotational orientation of transmembrane domains of membrane proteins.

● Synthesis of biodegradable polymers for drug delivery systems: Some of the notable examples are preparation and characterization of cross-linked hydrogels, polyesters, polyrotaxane and their drug conjugates. Development of novel polymeric membranes for transdermal formulations and preparation of polymeric particles for injectable implants are the other research projects.
